You might be surprised to learn the REAL reason I started my own Scentsy biz

Back in 2010, I was experiencing some of my lowest lows. I had been officially diagnosed with depression, and had to make the gut-wrenching decision to bring my 18 month old home on palliative care when his cancer relapsed with no good outcome from further treatment.

Oof. That’s heavy.

In July of 2010, my son lost his 13 month battle with childhood cancer.

After we buried our son, the only reason I was waking up in the morning was because of my older son (he wasn’t even 3 yet).

In September I couldn’t prolong my short-term leave from work anymore, so I went back to a job that I no longer enjoyed. In a word, it was soul-sucking. I was battling through the stage of grief where ANY problems other than my own seemed insignificant.

So, when I convinced my husband that I would make a $119 payment on my visa, so I could get myself a Scentsy starter kit, it wasn’t with dreams of doing parties, building a team, quitting my job, earning a huge income, or getting to travel on someone else’s dime…

When I joined Scentsy on January 1, 2011, it was purely for an escape. A distraction from the numbing grief and depression that I was trudging through.

My Scentsy Starter Kit provided just that! About two weeks later (this was back in the stone ages of slowwww cross-border shipping), a box full of Scentsy wax testers, Scentsy catalogs, and other products arrived on my porch. There was even a Scentsy Buddy for my son! 

IT WAS SO FUN!

Of course, when we find something FUN that makes us smile and talk fast, that makes our eyes light up; we want to share it. So I invited my friends and family - that had just walked through some of the worst times of my life with me - to come over and check it out.

Here’s the thing: I had never BEEN to a Scentsy party, so I had no idea what to do. I didn’t want to give an awkward, sales-pitchy presentation… so I didn’t! I made use of the free training on my Scentsy workstation, and figured out that I could just set up the contents of my Starter Kit on the dining room table, provide a snack, and that was it.

it’s literally this easy!

To my surprise, that was all it took! It really was that simple. My people not only showed up for me, they fell in love. Most of those who ordered from my Scentsy Launch Party still order from me today, and I am forever grateful for their early and constant support.

My business has taken lots of twists and turns over the years, I have learned through many ups and downs, but I think it’s safe to say that regardless of WHY I joined, I’m just so glad I had an ounce of courage to try something new.

In the past 11 years, I have learned more about business, marketing, and personal growth than I ever imagined. I have blown my own mind, time and again.

My favourite part of my Scentsy biz, though, is without a doubt – helping other women get started and see what they are really capable of. It is a privilege to be the one who shines the light on someone else’s talents and abilities before they are even aware of them.

I get a front row seat to watch beautiful stores unfold, and I love it.
